Yes, Some Countries Will Pay You to Move—Here’s the List

Countries That Will Pay You to Live There

Although it initially seems like a scam, getting paid to move to a new place isn't. If you're willing to move, a startling number of towns, cities, and even entire nations are offering housing, money, or other benefits.

Usually, it's because they need new faces, schools are closing, businesses are getting smaller, and people are leaving. These programs can actually make it easier than you might think if you've ever wanted to start over somewhere quieter or simply different.

1. Switzerland

Switzerland

Albinen is a small mountain town that will compensate you for relocating there. If you buy or build a house and commit to living there for ten years, it will cost about CHF 25,000 for adults and CHF 10,000 for children.

The catch is that you must be under 45 and the house must be worth a respectable sum. All the residents want is for young families to return so the town doesn't become forgotten. Despite Switzerland's high cost of living, it would be very alluring to raise children while taking in the views of the mountains.

2. Spain

Spain

For years, Spain has struggled with deserted villages. The "Live in Ambroz" initiative in Extremadura offers remote workers up to €15,000 to relocate and remain in the area. Bonuses, cheap housing, or even extra cash if you bring kids are offered by other locations like Ponga or Griegos.

Maintaining rural life and schools is the larger picture here. It's more about bringing vitality to villages that would otherwise die out than it is about making quick money.

3. Italy

Italy

A bunch of Italian regions have been trying different things to bring people in. Up north in Trentino, they’ve offered grants if you’re willing to move. Down in Calabria, there have been payments aimed at younger professionals to fill out towns that have been shrinking for years. And of course, you’ve probably heard about the €1 houses.

They’re basically abandoned, falling-apart homes that you can buy for next to nothing—as long as you agree to fix them up. On paper it sounds like a dream, but anyone who’s actually gone through the process will tell you it’s a lot of work and red tape. Even so, the idea of ending up with a stone house in Sardinia or Sicily keeps pulling people in.

4. Ireland

Ireland

Ireland's offshore islands are the focus of its "Our Living Islands" initiative. Grants of up to €84,000 are available for the restoration of a vacant home, provided that it serves as your primary residence. It is a means of preventing the extinction of island communities. Although the idea of living in a wild, isolated place is alluring, you should make sure you can manage ferry schedules and Atlantic storms before making the move.

5. USA

 USA

Some cities in the United States have taken an innovative approach. Remote workers who relocate to Tulsa, Oklahoma and stay for at least a year will receive $10,000. Assistance with moving expenses, internet stipends, and even tax breaks are available in Paducah, Kentucky. The goal of these programs is to draw in new energy and skilled workers, not to save abandoned towns. Digital nomads who prefer a slower pace without travelling abroad are drawn to them.

6. Chile

Chile

Chile has supported startups. For entrepreneurs who bring their ideas to Chile, initiatives such as Start-Up Chile offer resources, work visas, and grants. It's more important to "launch your business here with a bit of help" than to "move here for the scenery." It's worthwhile to investigate if you have a startup in your back pocket.

7. Japan

Japan

Japan's rural areas have been rapidly declining, and some now hire foreigners to settle there. Those who agree to live and work in smaller communities can receive several million yen from the Regional Revitalisation Corps. Sometimes it has to do with farming or local projects, and other times it has to do with assisting small towns in modernising. The trade-off is that you commit to a completely different lifestyle in exchange for the money.

8. Canada

Canada

Local governments in some Canadian provinces, such as Saskatchewan, have tried offering relocation assistance in the form of tax breaks, lower real estate prices, and occasionally assistance with moving costs. Although these aren't as lavish as those found in Europe, they do represent a larger trend: smaller communities attempting to offset population decline.

9. Portugal

Portugal

Portugal has a program called Emprego Interior MAIS. You may be eligible for a grant and additional assistance if you are prepared to relocate to its less populated interior regions and bring your work with you. It's a way for those who can't afford to live in Lisbon or Porto to move more cheaply and still experience Portuguese culture.

Things to Know Before Moving

These kinds of programs are about more than just the money. Usually, you must first obtain the appropriate visa or residency permit. Some demand that you purchase or renovate real estate, while others demand evidence that you will remain for a predetermined period of time.

Costs can also be misleading; even something that appears inexpensive on paper may seem pricey when you're living far from amenities or paying island prices for necessities. Additionally, there are always fine print, such as age restrictions, early departure repayment clauses, or limitations on how the funds may be used.

It's also a good idea to consider the day-to-day: are there good schools or hospitals in the area, and will the internet be fast enough for working remotely? The move can be made or broken by those minor details.

FAQs

Are these programs always available?

Not really. They change all the time depending on local budgets and politics. Something offered this year could disappear the next.

Can foreigners apply?

In many cases, yes. But requirements differ. Some want you to already have legal residency, others are open to anyone who meets conditions.

Do I have to be a remote worker?

Sometimes. A lot of these programs target remote workers, but others prefer families, young professionals, or entrepreneurs.

What if I leave before the required time?

Usually, you’ll have to pay back some or all of the money. That’s why it’s important not to treat it as free cash—it’s an investment in staying put.

Conclusion

These offers aren’t magic tickets, but they do exist. If you’ve ever daydreamed about moving somewhere slower, cheaper, or just different, these incentives could be the nudge. The trick is matching what you want in life with what the town or country is offering. The money is just the starting point—the real draw is the chance to build a new chapter somewhere that actually wants you there.
